Mass Evacuations in Hebron
The Israeli operation in Hebron began after two Palestinian gunmen opened fire on a military checkpoint, killing two soldiers and wounding three. In response, Israeli forces demolished homes and commercial premises, restricting residents to their immediate neighborhoods. Since Friday, more than 3,000 Palestinians have been evacuated, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). OCHA says aid partners are working with local authorities to meet the basic needs of those displaced. UN human‑rights chief Volker Türk called the measures collective punishment and urged that all displaced persons be allowed to return and receive compensation for unlawful evictions.
Escalating Violence Across the Occupied Territories
Violence has spread beyond Hebron, with OCHA recording more than 2,000 settler attacks across the West Bank since the start of 2026, a yearly high that has disrupted the olive harvest and caused extensive property damage. In Gaza, families living along the so‑called “yellow line” continue to face arson attacks. UN teams identified at least nine households that lost shelters in Ash Shuja’iyyeh after a fire on Sunday, and an earlier blaze displaced about 200 families. Additional insecurity includes three separate shooting incidents near UN schools and a convoy, and a UN site in Deir al Balah that came under fire.
Legal Concerns and International Response
An independent UN commission of inquiry has concluded that Israel has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territory, citing extermination, persecution and torture. Commission chair Srinivasan Muralidhar warned that the demolition of homes in the West Bank and ongoing attacks in Gaza form part of a broader strategy aimed at displacing Palestinians and rendering conditions unlivable. Volker Türk echoed these concerns, stating that threats to empty entire neighborhoods raise serious doubts of ethnic cleansing. The UN has called for accountability, compensation for unlawful evictions and an immediate end to punitive measures.
